A Draft Becomes a Finished Story

The first draft of a story often contains discoveries alongside confusion. A character introduced for one scene becomes central, an early explanation turns out to be unnecessary, and the ending reveals what the opening should emphasize. Revision begins by examining the whole shape before polishing individual sentences. The writer identifies the main change, tracks the decisions that cause it, and marks scenes that repeat the same work. Removing a favorite passage can be difficult, but its quality does not guarantee that it belongs in this particular story. After structural changes, attention moves closer to the page. Dialogue is checked for distinct voices, descriptions are placed where characters would notice them, and vague verbs are replaced when precision improves movement. Feedback from readers helps reveal gaps because they do not possess the writer’s private knowledge. Their confusion is evidence, though their preferred solution is not automatically the only answer. The writer asks what produced the response and chooses a revision consistent with the intended effect. Later passes address continuity, grammar, sound, and formatting. Time away from the draft can make familiar weaknesses visible again. Finishing does not mean achieving a flawless text with no possible alternative. It means the story’s choices support one another strongly enough that further changes offer little improvement. Revision turns invention into communication by testing whether the experience imagined by the writer can be followed by someone else.
