Following an Unreliable Narrator

An unreliable narrator does not always tell deliberate lies. The character may misunderstand events, protect a painful memory, exaggerate personal importance, or notice only what fits an existing belief. Readers gradually recognize the gap between the account and the larger story. A confident description may conflict with another character’s quiet response. An object dismissed as meaningless can return with clear importance. Dates, distances, or remembered words may shift between chapters. These signals invite attention without requiring the narrator to become a puzzle that can be solved completely. The technique works best when unreliability grows from character and circumstance rather than from a final trick. Readers should be able to understand why this person sees the world in a particular way, even when the interpretation is incomplete. Other voices can provide contrast, but the author need not replace uncertainty with one perfectly objective account. In discussion, readers often disagree about which statements deserve trust. Useful analysis points to language, omissions, contradictions, and consequences instead of merely declaring the narrator dishonest. The result can create humor, tension, sympathy, or unease. It also reminds readers that every story is shaped by selection. Someone chooses where to begin, what to emphasize, and which details remain outside the frame. An unreliable narrator makes that ordinary act of storytelling unusually visible.
